SSI StrategySakhalin Salmon Initiative
Effective salmon conservation on Sakhalin requires a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates a diverse group of local and international stakeholders. To ensure effectiveness, conservation efforts will focus on priority basins, while other projects, including the regional monitoring plan and the watershed councils network effort, will take a regional approach. The identity of priority basins was preliminarily determined at the January 2007 Sakhalin Salmon Initiative Regional River Prioritization Seminar, where a group of local scientists representing the island’s main research institutions declared the Langry-Bolshaya region of Northwestern Sakhalin the main priority for protected area creation.
To ensure that Sakhalin's salmon ecosystems and the communities they support thrive in the 21st century, the Sakhalin Salmon Initiative has six focal areas:
Benefits of the SSI Strategy
- Salmon habitat will be restored, poaching will be reduced, and protected areas' conservation strengthened.
- The ability of Sakhalin institutions and individuals to conserve salmon will be substantially increased.
- An economic constituency for conservation will be encouraged by promoting the development of sustainable salmon fisheries.
Governance and management
SSI's governance and management have adopted international best practices for transparency and operational integrity. The main implementation body, the SSI Center, works with a coordinating committee composed of representatives of national, regional, and local government, business, and local and international non-governmental organizations. Project-specific working groups consult closely with the SSI Center regarding the progress of the six focal projects.
