Upcoming Event: Tour the John Day Basin on October 20thNews & Program Updates
September, 2007
Join David Colbeck, Wild Salmon Center's John Day Program Coordinator, on a day-long tour of salmon and big game habitat restoration projects in the mid-John Day Canyon. Dave will lead the salmon portion of the tour which is sponsored and hosted by the Oregon Paleo Lands Institute.
The John Day River is renowned as one of the Northwest's "salmon strongholds". The Columbia's longest free-flowing tributary hosts some of the basin's healthiest steelhead and spring Chinook. You may also glimpse the area's first new herd of Bighorns in a century, find signs of bear, mule deer, and elk, and will see the area's diverse bird life. The tour will explore ways that local conservation projects have restored fish passage, enhanced riparian and range habitat, and improved upland wildlife habitat.
