Programs
The North Pacific Ecosystem. Science and conservation in priority water basins.
The Wild Salmon Center identifies and protects the most important river basins across the North Pacific, where salmon runs are abundant, where biological diversity remains high, and where our scientific efforts and partnerships will have the greatest conservation impact.
Kamchatka
The Wild Salmon Center works in partnership with local and regional government agencies, Russian and international non-governmental organizations, scientific institutions and other stakeholders to support protection of Kamchatka's highly productive salmon ecosystems. We helped establish and continue to fund two salmon biostations on the Kol and Utkholok Rivers. These biostations, operated in partnership with the Wild Fishes and Biodiversity Foundation, Moscow State University and the University of Montana, are unlocking the secrets of how pristine salmon ecosystems work.
North America
The Wild Salmon Center is working with scientists, government agencies, businesses and local communities to identify and conserve the most important remaining salmon strongholds in the United States Pacific Coast region. We protect river basins which offer salmon the best chance of surviving the long-term impacts of natural resource development and global warming.
Russian Far East
The Wild Salmon Center has worked in the Russian Far East since the late 1990s. With our Russian partners we have conducted assessments of the biological diversity, habitat quality, and the conservation potential of numerous river basins. Our success has depended on working with local communities and a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the long-term health of the region’s wild salmon rivers.
State of the Salmon Consortium
State of the Salmon is a joint program of the Wild Salmon Center and Ecotrust, a Portland, Oregon-based organization dedicated to conservation and sustainable development in western North America. State of the Salmon is building awareness of salmon status and trends across the North Pacific and providing the scientific and technical support for developing new salmon conservation policies and management practices.
